Understanding Neurodivergence: Autism, ADHD & OCD
Neurodivergence refers to natural variations in how people think, process information, and experience the world. It’s not a disorder to be “fixed” but a difference to be understood, supported, and embraced.
Three common and often co-occurring neurodivergent profiles include:
Autism: Differences in sensory processing, social communication, and intense focus or special interests.
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder): Challenges with executive functioning, emotional regulation, and maintaining attention—alongside bursts of creativity and innovation.
OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder): Characterized by intrusive thoughts and compulsions, often linked to anxiety and perfectionism, especially when rooted in a need for safety or certainty.
For many people—especially AuDHD folks (those who are both Autistic and have ADHD)—traditional therapy models may not fit. That’s where relational, affirming, and specialized cognitive approaches come in.
A Relational Approach to Neurodivergence
Relational therapy is grounded in the healing power of the therapeutic relationship. Instead of pathologizing behaviors, it emphasizes connection, trust, and attunement. For neurodivergent people who’ve experienced masking, rejection, or ableism, a warm, collaborative, and validating relationship is essential.
Why This Matters:
Neurodivergent individuals often struggle with feeling misunderstood, especially in clinical settings.
Many have learned to mask or suppress parts of themselves to fit in, leading to burnout and identity confusion.
Relational therapy helps unmask safely, build authentic self-understanding, and co-create meaning in therapy.
As a neurodivergent therapist who is both Autistic and ADHD (AuDHD), I know the pain of being in spaces where you have to over-explain your experience, or worse, feel like you’re "too much" or "not enough." In my practice, your neurodivergence is not something to manage—it's something to honor.
What Is Inference-Based Cognitive Therapy (I-CBT)?
Inference-Based Cognitive Therapy (I-CBT) is a form of CBT designed specifically for OCD, especially for people whose symptoms are rooted in doubt, hyperanalysis, and intrusive thoughts.
Instead of disputing the content of obsessive thoughts (e.g., “What if I left the stove on?”), I-CBT addresses the processthat leads you to believe the thought in the first place.
Why I-CBT Works for Neurodivergent Minds (Especially AuDHD):
Pattern Recognition: Autistic and ADHD individuals are often highly analytical. I-CBT respects and utilizes this strength by exploring how inference-making goes off course.
Respect for Logic: I-CBT aligns with how many neurodivergent people think—logically, precisely, and with a desire for clarity.
Non-pathologizing: Instead of labeling thoughts as irrational or dysfunctional, I-CBT encourages clients to examine how and why the brain creates “stories”—with curiosity and compassion.
Structure with Flexibility: AuDHD folks often do well with structured frameworks that still allow for personalization and pacing. I-CBT offers that balance.
When paired with relational, neurodivergent-affirming care, I-CBT can be life-changing—not just for OCD, but for building trust in your own mind again.
Why Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy Matters
Most mental health models were designed around neurotypical norms. That means neurodivergent people are often misdiagnosed, misunderstood, or even harmed in therapy.
Neurodivergent-affirming therapy offers:
No masking: You don’t have to hide your stims, infodumps, tangents, or shutdowns.
Validation: Your way of thinking, feeling, and processing is seen as valid—not disordered.
Pacing that fits you: Whether you need structure, flexibility, or sensory accommodations, we adapt therapy to you.
Lived understanding: As an AuDHD therapist, I bring personal insight, not just textbook knowledge. Therapy isn't from the outside looking in—it's from the inside, walking with you.
Therapy That Gets It
I work with neurodivergent adults navigating OCD, ADHD, and Autism—especially those who’ve felt "too much" for therapists or "too complex" for traditional models.
Whether you're exploring a late diagnosis, unmasking in your relationships, or untangling the looping thoughts of OCD, you deserve support that respects your brain, your pace, and your story.
