What is somatic therapy?
Somatic therapy is a powerful bottom-up approach that treats trauma by tuning into physical sensations and releasing the bodily tension and patterns trauma creates.
Benefits of Somatic Therapy:
Releases chronic stress and hypervigilance
Improves body awareness and emotional regulation
Restores connection to self and inner wisdom
Helps heal shame and disembodiment, especially common in religious trauma
Allows for gentle, non-verbal processing of trauma
Somatic approaches may include:
Polyvagal-informed practices
Trauma Resiliency Model ™️
Breathwork and grounding exercises
Movement or body-based mindfulness
For queer and trans individuals who’ve been taught to disconnect from their bodies or feel unsafe in them, somatic therapy is especially healing. It fosters a sense of autonomy, dignity, and self-compassion—foundations that may have been eroded by religious abuse or exclusion.
Healing Is Possible
Whether you're recovering from years of religious indoctrination, spiritual abuse, or the compounded effects of being queer or trans in a rejecting faith community, you deserve healing. Trauma is not just a mental wound—it’s a full-body experience that needs a full-body approach.
Bottom-up therapies like somatic therapy offer a gentle and effective path to healing complex and religious trauma. They help rebuild your sense of safety, restore your relationship with your body, and reclaim your power and identity.
